Happy Independence Day to all Ghanaians!

We tried to place the advert below in support of queer and trans Ghanaians in the Daily Graphic, Ghana’s paper of record. As we have been arguing, the media’s complicity in advancing homophobia barred us from successfully running the advert. We were informed that “Graphic is a national newspaper and we are not allowed to publish something that the Government and country do not approve off.... [If published] Government can hold Graphic responsible.” If true, the paper’s response contravenes claims that Ghana has a free press and highlights the government’s bigotry and homophobia. If not, the paper’s refusal to publish the advert demonstrates some of the ways the media suppresses voices of solidarity and support for queer and transgender Ghanaians. We have chosen to publish the advert on the platforms available to us, to show our support for those Ghanaians who do not yet enjoy freedom in our own country. Please share with your networks. In solidarity.

We will not be silenced.
